Use DeepL's services directly in Microsoft Word. The add-in allows you to translate text into all supported languages or improve your text using AI-powered spelling, grammar, and style corrections.
The DeepL add-in is available for Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
The DeepL for Microsoft Word add-in is supported for the following products:
- Word 2019 or later on Windows, except for Office 2019 (Volume/Professional Plus)
- Word 2016 or later on Mac
- Word for Windows (Microsoft 365)
- Word for Mac (Microsoft 365)
- Word for web
Setup and login
- Open a Document, click the Home tab and click Add-ins in the toolbar
If not visible, click More options - Select More Add-ins and type "DeepL" in the search bar
- Select DeepL for Word and click Add
Alternatively, you can find the add-in here.
Once you've added it, you need to set it up.
- Go back to the Home tab and click More options
in the toolbar
- Click Open DeepL
- A new pane will appear on the right side of the page
- Click Get started
Next up, you will need to log in with your DeepL account or sign up for one.
To log in to your DeepL account, do the following:
- Click the Login button
- You'll be asked to confirm that DeepL is allowed to open a new window.
- Click Allow and enter your credentials in the new window.
If your company has enabled login via SSO for your team, you can also click Continue with SSO.

For Mac: Go to the Home tab and click More Add-ins under Add-ins
For Windows: Go to the File tab and click Get Add-ins - You will be forwarded to the Microsoft AppSource
- Type "DeepL" in the search bar
- Add DeepL for Word by clicking Get it now
You'll find the add-in in the Home tab, on the right side of the toolbar. Alternatively, you can find it via My Add-ins under Add-ins.
After you've added the add-in, you need to set it up.
- Click Open DeepL
- A new window will open on the right side of the screen
- Click Get started
Next up, you will need to log in with your DeepL account or sign up for one.

- Click the Login button
- You'll be asked to confirm that DeepL is allowed to open a new window.
- Click Allow and enter your credentials in the new window.
If your company has enabled login via SSO for your team, you can also click Continue with SSO.
Translate text
To translate parts of you document into a language of your choice, do the following:
- Select Translator at the top of the DeepL pane
- Choose the language you want to translate into
- Select the text you would like to translate
- The translation will automatically appear in the DeepL pane
Other possible actions:
- Click Replace text with translation to replace the original text with its translation
- Click the Copy icon
to copy the translation to your clipboard
- Click Detect language to manually select a source language
The following features are supported:
- Glossary
- Formality
Apply a glossary
To apply a glossary to your translations in Word, do the following:
- Click the glossary icon
in the DeepL window
- Select the glossary you would like to apply
Set the tone
To apply different tones to your translations for languages supported by the formality feature, click the formality icon in the DeepL window and select the tone:
- Formal tone
- Informal tone
- Automatic
Translate the whole document
Translate your whole document with DeepL's file translation feature via the DeepL for Word add-in.
When translating files via the Word add-in, it will consume file translations from your monthly threshold.
- Select Documents at the top of the DeepL window
- Select a language you would like to translate into
- Click Translate to [language] to start your translation
Your translated file will be saved as a new copy and open directly after the translation. Your original file will remain unchanged.
If you have connected cloud services in your DeepL account, you can also upload the translated file directly to a connected service. Click Save to cloud after the translation and select a cloud service.

Improve text
DeepL Write corrects spelling and grammar mistakes and adapts the overall style of your text.
- Select Write at the top of the DeepL window
- Select the text you want to improve
- The improved version will automatically be displayed in the DeepL window.
Other possible actions:
- Click Replace text with improvement to replace the original text with the improved version
- Click Detect language to manually select a source language
Change the style and tone
When using the Write function, you can also adjust the writing style and tone of your improved version.
- Click on Style
- Select a style and/or tone for your text
- Click on Apply
Your text will be rewritten in the selected style and tone. To remove the applied style or tone, click Style again and select Reset.
