How can I use the DeepL Translate browser extensions?
With the DeepL Translate extensions for Chrome and Edge, you can do the following within your browser:
- Translate full pages while you read (only for Pro subscribers)
- Translate selected text while you read
- Translate while you write
Full-page translation
To be able to translate full pages, log in to your DeepL Pro account. When browsing a new page, you will be asked whether you'd like the website to be translated. Here you can choose your target language. You can change the target language at any time in the settings. Please note that the target language for full-page translation and selected text is the same.
To translate the page, click the Translate button.
If you want full pages that are written in a specific language to be automatically translated to your target language, you can also select this option displayed above the Translate button. You can change this preference at any time in the settings under Always translate automatically from.
By clicking on the menu icon next to the Translate button, you will see more options:
- If you don't want to translate a website, you can choose the option Never translate this site. You can change this in the settings at any time.
- If you don't want to translate a source language, you can choose the option Never translate from. You can change this in the settings at any time.
Please note that full-page translations aren't currently available for free users.
Translating selected text
To be able to translate selected text, select the text you would like to translate and press the shortcut ⇧+⌘+Y for Mac / Ctrl+Shift+Y for Windows or click on the DeepL icon which will appear. You can also change the shortcut in your settings if you want to use a custom shortcut.
The DeepL window will then appear and show the translation. You also have the options to listen to the translation or copy it to the clipboard.
Here you can select your target language for reading. You can also change the target language at any time in the settings under Reading.
Moreover, you can also adjust the position of the window in which the translation is shown.
Writing
To be able to translate while writing, type the text in your language and click on the DeepL icon in the top-right corner of the text area to translate it. The complete text will be translated immediately to your target language, replacing the text you’ve entered.
To activate the DeepL Translate extension for your browser, you can also press the shortcut ⇧+⌘+Y for Mac / Ctrl+Shift+Y for Windows or your custom shortcut.
If no default target language is set, you will be asked to select one before the translation.
You can change your target language at any time by clicking on the settings icon which is displayed next to the DeepL icon in the text area.
If you don’t want to use DeepL Translate for writing, you can turn it off in the settings by using the toggle switch. You can turn it on in the settings at any time under Writing.
