All languages supported for DeepL Translator are also available in the browser extensions.
Some limits may apply to the functionality of the browser extensions depending on your DeepL plan. You can find more information about these limitations in this article.
Translate as you read
Translate parts of a texts while browsing a website with the DeepL browser extensions. The translation will be shown in a small window ("advanced mode") that you can freely move by dragging and dropping it with your cursor.
To translate sections of text using the advanced mode, do the following:
- Select the text you would like to translate and click the floating character icon
(shortcut ⇧+⌘+Y for Mac / Ctrl+Shift+Y for Windows)
- The translation will pop up in the advanced mode window
- Define your target language via the right hand language dropdown at the top of the window
- (Optional) Copy your translation to your clipboard, listen to the translation, and more
- (Optional) Customize your translation using the glossary
or select alternative translations
If you want to use a custom shortcut, you can also change the shortcut in your settings.
Alternatively, you can copy and paste the text you would like to translate into the browser extension sidebar.
- Click the DeepL icon
in your browser's toolbar
- Select the language you would like to translate into
- Highlight the text you would like to translate
- Do a right click on the text and select Copy (shortcut ⌘+C for Mac / Ctrl+C for Windows)
- Do a right click in the first text box in the sidebar and select Paste (shortcut ⌘+V for Mac / Ctrl+V for Windows)
Translate as you write
For emails, comments or other texts you input in your browser, you can use DeepL to translate your writing instantly.
To translate as you write, do the following:

Type text in your source language and highlight it

Select the text you would like to translate and click the floating character icon

The translation will pop up in the advanced mode window
- Define your target language via the right hand language dropdown at the top of the window
- (Optional) Copy your translation to your clipboard, listen to the translation, and more
- (Optional) Customize your translation using the glossary
or select alternative translations
- Click Replace in field
To activate the DeepL extension for your browser, you can also press the shortcut ⇧+⌘+Y (for Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+Y (for Windows), or your custom shortcut. Your original text will then be replace with its translation.
If no default target language is set, you will be asked to select one before the translation.
You can change your target language at any time in the settings under Translate your writing into or in the advanced mode window.
Set the formality
When translating your writing with the Chrome, Edge, and Firefox extensions, you have the option to change the tone of your translation with DeepL's formal/informal feature in the advanced mode window.
To apply a formal or informal tone, do the following:
- Log in with your DeepL account in your browser extension
- Select the text you would like to translate and click the floating character icon
(shortcut ⇧+⌘+Y for Mac / Ctrl+Shift+Y for Windows)
- Click the dropdown menu on the right side of the window
- Select a tone for your translation:
- Automatic
- Formal
- Informal
- Click Replace in field
Translate full pages
With the Full-page translation feature you can translate whole webpages instantly. The page will be translated automatically as you scroll down. This feature is only available for DeepL Pro subscribers.
To translate webpages, do the following:
- Log in to your DeepL account via the browser extension
- Visit a website you'd like to translate
- A pop-up will appear—choose your target language and click Translate page
- The text will automatically be translated into your target language as you scroll down
To view the original text, click Show original in the pop-up or reload the page.
To automatically translate pages in certain languages or to deactivate the full-page translation pop-up, go to the extension settings. Learn more about browser extension settings here.
