When you enable the Storage option before starting your file translation, you can edit your translated file within DeepL afterwards within the Expert Editor. This allows you to check the contents of the translated file and make changes before downloading the translation.
A translated file can only be edited by the owner of the file, which is always the person who started the translation.
If you assign a file translation for review, the reviewer will also have editing rights to the file until the review is finished.
Both the owner and reviewer of a file can access it via the saved translation section and make changes to the translated text in the Expert Editor.
Edit the translated text
Edit the text of your translated file segment by segment.
- Click into a segment of the translated text
- Edit the translated text
- Optional: Click the arrow icon to move to the next segment
- Click Complete review after you're done with your edits
Your edits will be saved automatically.
If a translation memory has been applied to your translation before, your edits to segments with a translation memory match will be captured in the translation memory as well. This will happen automatically as you edit the text.

Approve segments
You can approve segments after you are finished editing or reviewing them. This helps you to track the progress of your review.
To approve a segment, click the circle next to the text or use the shortcut Command ⌘ + Shift ⇧ + Enter ↵ for Mac or Control + Shift ⇧ + Enter ↵ for Windows.
You can view the current progress at the top of the Expert Editor.
Leave comments
Enter comments for each segment of the translation. To leave comments, do the following:
- Navigate to the segment you would like to leave a comment about
- Click the speech bubble icon
- Enter your comment in the sidebar
- Click Add to save your comment
View a preview of the translated file
You can view a preview of your edited translation and the original file within the Expert Editor. To open the preview, do the following:
- Click Preview in the Expert Editor
- Click the expand icon to open a full-page view of the preview
- Optional: Click the toggle switch Show original
To refresh the preview after you made edits, click the Regenerate button.
View automatic suggestions for translation issues
If you have enabled the translation quality evaluation option, you can access the results of the evaluation within the Expert Editor. Here, you can also view suggestions about how to fix the found issues. All potential issues found by the evaluation will be highlighted with a flag icon .
To view automatic suggestions, do the following:
- Select a flagged segment
- Check the suggestion
- Click Apply and resolve to apply the suggestion
or
Click Dismiss to close the suggestion and dismiss the flagged issue
If you notice any issues with the suggestion you can provide feedback about it to the DeepL team. Click the thumbs-down icon next to the suggestion and select one of the reasons from the dropdown menu.
View information about customization options
If you selected one or more glossaries, a style rule list, or a translation memory for your file translation, you can learn more about how these assets have been applied for your translated file within the Expert Editor.
Click a segment in your translated file and open the customization section in the sidebar. Here you can see which glossary, style rule, or translation memory has been applied.
For translation memories, you can also view the percentage of the match.
Filter segments
You can filter for specific segments based on their status, translation quality evaluation (TQE) score, translation error severity, or translation memory match rate.
You can access the filters via the filtering icon at the top of the page.
