Is it possible to integrate DeepL into Microsoft Outlook?
Yes, with our add-in, you can use DeepL directly in your web or desktop application for Microsoft Outlook. The add-in allows you to translate your emails from and into all supported languages or improve them, with AI-powered spelling and grammar corrections, as well as style adjustments.

Note: The DeepL add-in is currently only available for Microsoft Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
For Microsoft admins, we also offer the option to deploy DeepL for PowerPoint to either a specific group or throughout their entire organization. More information about this option can be found here.
Set up DeepL in Microsoft Outlook for the web
First, you need to add DeepL to Microsoft Outlook for the web:
- In the sidebar on the left, click the icon
- Click Add apps
- Search for "DeepL" in the search bar
- Select the DeepL for Outlook add-in—a new window will open
- Get DeepL for Outlook by clicking Add
Alternatively, you can find the add-in here.
Once you've added it, you need to set it up:
- In a new email go to the Message or Insert tab and click Apps
- Select DeepL for Outlook
- A panel will open on the right side of the page
- Click Get started
To log in, click the login button. You'll be asked to confirm that DeepL is allowed to open a new window. Click Allow and enter your credentials in the new window. If your company has enabled login via SSO for your team, click Continue with SSO to log in.
Please note that you need a DeepL account to use the DeepL for Outlook add-in.
You can now start translating and improving your texts.
Set up DeepL in your Microsoft Outlook desktop app
To add DeepL to your Microsoft Outlook desktop app:
- Click the three dots in your task pane and select Get Add-ins
- You will be redirected to the Office Store
- Type "DeepL" in the search bar
- Add DeepL for Outlook by clicking Get it now
You can now find the add-in In the task pane, under the three dots .
To set up the add-in:
- Click DeepL for Outlook
- A new window will open on the right side of the screen
- Click Get started
A new window will ask you to log in with your DeepL account or sign up for one. Please note that you need a DeepL account to use the DeepL for Outlook add-in.
To log in, click the login button and enter your credentials in the new window. If your company has enabled login via SSO for your team, click Continue with SSO.
You can now start translating and improving your emails.
Translate text in Microsoft Outlook
To translate your incoming emails in Outlook:
- Open DeepL for Outlook
- Click the Translator button at the top of the DeepL window
- Choose the language you would like to translate into
- Select the text you would like to translate
- Click Translate email
The translation will automatically be displayed in the DeepL window on the right side.
You also have the option to translate emails you're composing and replace the original text with its translation. To do so, click the Replace original button under the translation.
The language of your original text will be automatically detected and displayed right above the translated text. You can also change the original language of your email by clicking the detected language. A dropdown menu will open allowing you to change the language.
Note that the Translator in the DeepL add-in does not support the Dictionary feature.
Apply a glossary
If you have a DeepL Pro subscription, you also have the option to apply a glossary to your translations in Outlook. To do so, click the glossary icon in the DeepL window and select the glossary you would like to apply.
Note: You can't create, change or delete glossaries in DeepL for Outlook. To manage your glossaries, click on Edit glossary. You will be forwarded to the web translator, where you can make changes to your glossaries.
Set the tone
You can also apply different tones to your translations for languages supported by the formal/informal feature. Click on the formality icon in the DeepL window and select the tone you would like to apply:
- Formal tone
- Informal tone
- Automatic
Note: The formal/informal feature is only available for DeepL Pro subscribers.
Improve text in Microsoft Outlook
With the DeepL add-in for Outlook, you can improve your text using DeepL Write. DeepL Write corrects spelling and grammar mistakes, and can adapt the overall style of your text.
To improve your text directly in Outlook:
- Click the Write button at the top of the DeepL window
- Select the text you would like to improve
The improved version will automatically be displayed on the right side, in the DeepL window.
You have the option to replace the original text with its improved version. To do so, click the Replace original button under the improved text.
The language of your original text will be detected automatically and displayed right above the improved text. You can also change the original language of your text by clicking the detected language. A dropdown menu will open allowing you to change the language.
Please note that this feature currently only works for English and German.
The Write function of the DeepL add-in does not yet support the following feature:
- Show changes
Change the style and tone
When using the Write function, you can also adjust the writing style and tone of your improved version. To do so:
- Click on Style
- Select a style and/or tone for your text
- Click on Apply
Your text will be rewritten in the selected style and tone. To remove the applied style or tone, click on Style again and select Reset.
