Translate Adobe InDesign files (.idml) with the file translation feature via the web translator, desktop apps, or API.
When translating IDML files with DeepL, all texts contained in text frames will be translated. These include headlines, captions, table cells and texts within master pages and layers.
Alt text of embedded images, metadata files and objects names within the layers panel will not be translated.
DeepL API subscribers can translate IDML files by using /document requests. Consult our API documentation to learn how to translate IDML files with the DeepL API.
INDD files are not supported for file translation. Export the files as IDML before uploading them for file translation.
Troubleshooting
My translated file only contains white boxes or strange characters.
This could be caused by the used font not being supported for the language you translated your file into, for example for translations into Korean using a Latin alphabet only font.
Try to change the font of your file into one that supports your target language's character set.
Phrases like <content-1 or <content-N/ are internal placeholder markers, which are structural elements of your file that are normally invisible. These became part of the text during the translation, which also causes some of the structure of your file to be lost. If possible, simplify the character-style runs within your file before the translation.
The text in my translation is cut off, overflowing or parts of it are missing.
The text length of your translation might differ from the original text. This could cause the text to overset (shown by a red + at the end of the text frame) and appear cut off. Adjust the size of the text frame to fit the translated text.
The style of my translated text doesn't match the original text.
Paragraph and character styles are preserved for the translation, but manual adjustments or overrides might shift. This could happen if the text length of the translation and the original text differ significantly. These shifts need to be adjusted manually.
