Using DeepL in Gmail

You can use both DeepL Translate and DeepL Write directly in Gmail with the DeepL browser extensions for Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

Make sure you have added the DeepL browser extension to your browser. More information about how to add the extension to your browsers can be found in this article.

Note: The number of characters that can be translated at once with this integration is limited. The following limits apply:

• Free users without a DeepL account: 1500 characters
• Free users with a DeepL account: 5000 characters
• Users with a DeepL Pro subscription: unlimited characters

Using DeepL to read emails

With the DeepL for Gmail integration, you can translate the emails you've received with just a few clicks. 

To do so:

1. Open the email you want to translate
2. Select the language you want to translate into by clicking the second drop-down menu just below the sender.
3. Click the Translate email icon
4. To go back to the original text, click the left-facing arrow button next to the Translate email icon

The formatting of the translated email will be preserved upon translation.

The language of the original text is automatically detected. You can change it using the first drop-down menu below the sender.

You also have the option to forward the translated email directly. To do so, click on the right-facing arrow button.

Use DeepL to write emails

To translate the emails you write with DeepL for Gmail:

1. Click Compose to start writing a new email and enter your text
2. Click the DeepL icon that appears in your text field after you've started typing
3. A toolbar will open where you can select the language you would like to translate into
4. Select a language from the drop-down menu under Into:
5. Click Translate to replace your original text with its translation

After translating, you can choose to keep the translation or go back to the original text. To use the translation, click the checkmark icon . To revert the translation, click the arrow icon instead.

You can also use the Improve feature of the integration to have your emails automatically edited. The integration will fix spelling and grammatical errors and improve the style of your text.

Please note that this feature is only available for texts in English, German, French and Spanish.

To improve your text:

1. Click Compose to start writing a new email and enter your text
2. Click the DeepL icon that appears in your text field
3. Click Improve in the toolbar

The improved version of your text will automatically replace your original text. You need to confirm that you would like to keep this version by clicking the check mark icon .

If you want to undo the changes, click the arrow icon next to the check mark.

Disable DeepL for Gmail

To disable DeepL for Gmail, click the DeepL icon at the top of the page. Click the toggle switch next to Turn DeepL for Gmail on/off .

You can enable DeepL for Gmail at any time through the toggle switch or via the extension's settings.
