Use the screen capturing feature to capture and translate text from your screen. Text from the captured area will be extracted, inserted into the source text field of your desktop app, and translated into the language of your choice.
This feature is available for all users in the DeepL for Windows / DeepL for Mac app.
All supported source languages will appear in the dropdown list.
To use this feature, you first need to enable your source language for image translation in the app settings. To avoid performance issues, we recommend that you only enable the languages that you use most often.
- Click the menu icon
- Click Settings
- Click the Files & translation tab
- Under Capture text on screen select
up to 3 source languages from the dropdown menu
Once you have enabled the source languages, do the following:
- Click the screen capture icon
in the source text field
- Drag the crosshair cursor
to select the area of the screen to capture (press ESC to cancel)
- The text will be extracted and inserted into the source text field
- The translation will be automatically displayed
To take a screenshot and translate it with DeepL, do the following:
- Click on the screen capture icon
in the source text field
- Drag the crosshair cursor to select the area of the screen to capture
- The text will be extracted and inserted into the source text field
- The translation will be automatically displayed
Alternatively, access the feature by right-clicking the DeepL icon in your Dock and selecting Capture Text on Screen.
To use this feature, you must give permission to record your computer's screen when asked. You can grant or revoke permissions any time by doing the following:
- Open System Settings
- Choose Privacy & Security
- Under Privacy, click Screen Recording
- Activate the toggle switch for DeepL in the list of apps
