How can I use the screen capturing feature?
By using the screen capturing feature, you can capture and translate text on screen. This means that the text from the captured area will be extracted, inserted into the source text field, and translated into the language of your choice.
This feature is available for free users and DeepL Pro subscribers in the DeepL for Windows / DeepL for Mac app.
For Windows:
To translate text on screen, please enable the screen capturing feature in the DeepL for Windows settings, under Capture text on screen.
To take a screenshot and translate it with DeepL, do the following:
- Press the default shortcut Ctrl+F8. (Learn how to customize the shortcut here.)
- The mouse cursor will change to a crosshair symbol.
- Select the screen area to capture by dragging the crosshair. To cancel the capturing mode, press the Esc (Escape) key.
- The text will be extracted and inserted into the the source text field.
- The translation will be displayed.
Please note that if your screenshot doesn't contain any text, there will be no translation shown.
The feature currently only supports Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Spanish as the source language.
For Mac:
To translate text on screen, please first enable the screen capturing feature:
- Open the Preferences menu
- Under General, go to Capture text on screen
- Select ⇧⌘2
To use this feature, the permission to record your computer's screen has to be granted, when asked. You can also allow DeepL to record your screen at any time later by doing the following:
- Open System Preferences
- Choose Security & Privacy
- Go to the Privacy tab
- Once there, scroll to Screen Recording and check the box for DeepL in the list of apps
To take a screenshot and translate it with DeepL, do the following:

- The mouse cursor will change to a crosshair symbol
- Select the screen area to capture by dragging the crosshair
- The text will be extracted and inserted into the the source text field
- The translation will be displayed
