Can I adjust my translations to suit the context?
Yes. Whether you're a free user or DeepL Pro subscriber, you can easily change translations to fit your needs by selecting alternative words and phrases.
Using the Alternatives feature
There are two option to view alternative phrasings for your translation:
- Directly under the translation (single words and sentences)
- In a dropdown list (individual words)
For single words and sentences, several suggestions might be displayed under Alternatives. If you prefer one of these alternative translations, just click on it, and it will substitute the initial translation.
You can also select alternative translations of each word individually. To do so:
- Click on the word in your translation that you’d like to change
- A drop-down list with a Alternatives and a Dictionary tab will appear
- Select Alternatives
- Scroll down to see all the options and choose the one you prefer
Your translation will be automatically adjusted.
In case you would like to use that alternative as a rule, you can add it to the glossary. Learn more about the glossary feature here.
Important: please keep in mind that using alternatives can sometimes change the sentence structure of your translation. This means that adjustments later in the text might be replaced if you make changes in the preceding text.
Availability of the Alternatives feature
Alternatives displayed below the translation are available for text translation on the web translator, desktop apps, and mobile apps.
Alternatives displayed in the drop-down list are available for text translation on the web translator and desktop apps.
Important: please note that alternatives displayed in the drop-down list are not supported when translating into Chinese.
Alternative translations aren't available for entire documents unless you use Edit mode. This feature is also not supported when accessing DeepL through its API or CAT tool.
