What is an API key and where can I find it?
The API key is a code that enables access to our API. It looks similar to: df4385c2-33de-e423-4134-ca1f7b3ea8b7.
The API key for DeepL's API is included in a DeepL API Free or Pro plan. This lets you integrate DeepL's translation technology in your own products and services, as well as in plug-ins other than CAT tools.
To find your API keys, log in to your DeepL account and find the API keys tab in Your account.
In this tab, you also have the following options:
- Creating new API keys
- Deleting obsolete or corrupted keys
- Renaming keys
- Copying keys
- Exporting key-level CSV reports
It is possible to create more than one API key for your subscription.
If you are not sure which subscription you need for the integration, contact your third-party plug-in provider.
If you can't find an API key in your DeepL account, please check whether you are subscribed to the right plan.
Creating new API keys
You can create new API keys by clicking on Create key.
You can give an API key a name of your choosing. If you do not name the key, the name “DeepL API key” will be given to the key automatically.
The number of simultaneously active keys depends on your subscription. DeepL API Free users can use up to 2 keys at once. DeepL API Pro subscribers can use up to 25 keys simultaneously.
Deleting obsolete or corrupted keys
If one of your keys is stolen or you have problems with it, you can deactivate it and make a new one.
To deactivate your key:
- Click on the three dots on the right-hand side of the key
- Select Deactivate key
- Confirm that you would like to deactivate this key
Please note that your key will be deactivated immediately and that all requests made via this key will be rejected. It is not possible to recover a key after it has been deactivated.
Renaming keys
You can rename both active and deactivated keys in the API keys tab.
To rename a key:
- Click on the three dots on the right-hand side of the key
- Select Rename key
- Enter the new name
- Click on Rename key to confirm the change
You can select the same name for multiple keys.
Copying API keys
For security reasons, the full API key won't be visible in the API keys tab. To view the full key, you can copy it to your clipboard and insert it where needed.
To copy your key:
- Go to the key you'd like to copy
- Click on the copy icon on the right-hand side of the key
You can copy active and deactivated keys.
Exporting key-level CSV reports
Team admins can download key-level CSV reports to accurately attribute API usage and costs to different keys.
To download reports:
- Click Download key-level usage report
- Select a Time Period from the dropdown menu
- Click Download your report
Alternatively, you can find this option in the Usage tab.
