API usage and cost control

Set a limit for the number of characters and minutes that you can translate with DeepL API Pro. You can either set a monthly cost control limit for your subscription, or a monthly character usage limit per API key.

Set a monthly cost control limit

To set a monthly cost control limit for your subscription, follow these steps:

1. Go to the API Keys & Limits tab in your account 
2. Optional: Click Switch to Translation in the top right corner so that you are setting a limit for your text translation
3. Click Manage cost control in the top right corner
4. In the window that opens, select Activate cost control
5. Enter the monthly maximum limit of costs you wish to set (the limit must be higher than 0)
6. Click Submit

To remove the cost control limit, do the following:

1. Click Manage cost control 
2. Deselect Activate cost control
3. Click Submit

Once you have reached your cost control limit, the DeepL API will not process any further translation requests until the end of the billing period. If you would like to translate more, you can make further changes at any time.

Set a monthly speech to text limit

To set a monthly speech to text limit for your subscription, follow these steps:

1. Go to the API Keys & Limits tab in your account 
2. Optional: Click Switch to Speech To Text in the top right corner so that you are setting a limit for your monthly minutes
3. Click Manage maximum minutes per month in the top right corner
4. In the window that opens, select Activate speech-to-text limit
5. Enter the monthly maximum limit of minutes you wish to set (the limit must be higher than 0)
6. Click Submit

To remove the speech to text limit, do the following:

1. Click Manage maximum minutes per month 
2. Deselect Activate speech-to-text limit
3. Click Submit

Set a monthly key-level usage limit

To set a monthly key-level usage limit, follow these steps:

1. Go to the API Keys & Limits tab in your account
2. Click the more options icon next to the key for which you want to set a usage limit 
3. Click Set limit
4. In the window that opens, select Activate usage limit
5. Enter the limits for characters and speech-to-text minutes you wish to enforce in the fields below
6. Click Submit

Your new limit is applied immediately. You can edit or remove the limit at any time by clicking the more options icon next to the key.

Once you have reached a key's limit, the DeepL API will not process any further translation requests until the end of the billing period. If you would like to translate more, you can make further changes at any time.
