Use DeepL shortcuts for desktop apps

Translate your text faster by using shortcuts in DeepL desktop apps. You'll speed up your work by removing the need to manually copy and paste text.

In DeepL for Windows, you can also easily improve your texts from any app using a shortcut.

When you copy a text using the Ctrl+C or ⌘+C shortcut, nothing will be sent to DeepL. Only when you use the Ctrl+C+C or ⌘+C+C shortcut, your text will be processed to DeepL for translation.

 

To use a shortcut to translate text from any app, do the following:

  1. Select the text you would like to translate
  2. Press the keyboard shortcut ⌘ + C + C (hold ⌘ and type C twice)
  3. Translated text will appear in a small window on top of the app you're using

To use a shortcut to improve text from any app, do the following:

  1. Select the text you would like to improve
  2. Either click the floating DeepL icon or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + ⌘ + C (hold Ctrl and the ⌘ key and type C)
  3. Your selected text will be copied into the app and improved there

To customize your shortcuts, do the following:

  1. Open the DeepL for Mac app
  2. Click the menu icon three horizontal strips and choose Settings
  3. Go to the Keyboard shortcut tab and enter your new shortcut

When you use a shortcut, you have two quick access display options:

  • Open a small floating window
  • Open the DeepL app

To change your quick access display setting, do the following: 

  1. Open the DeepL for Mac app
  2. Click the menu icon three horizontal strips and choose Settings
  3. Go to the General tab and choose your preferred setting under Quick access options

 Your combination must include a modifier key (⌘/Ctrl/Option/Shift) and an alphanumeric key (character, digit, or spacebar).

You can easily quit the app via ⌘ + Q. In the app's settings under When closing DeepL, you can decide, whether you would like to quit the app completely or run it in the background.
If the app runs in the background, it will no longer show up in your menu bar, but will be reopened when you use the translation shortcut.

In your app's settings you can do the following:

  • Enable, disable, and customize the keyboard shortcut
  • Choose where you'd like the translated or improved text to appear (small window vs directly in the DeepL app)
  • Show or hide the floating DeepL icon

Before using a shortcut, make sure it is activated in your settings.

  4. Choose your preferred settings under Translate selected text

To use a shortcut to improve text from any app, do the following:

  1. Select the text you would like to improve
  2. Either click the floating DeepL icon or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Windows key + C (hold Ctrl and the Windows key and type C)
  3. Your selected text will be copied into the app and improved there

To customize and manage your text improvement shortcut, do the following:

  1. Open the DeepL for Windows app
  2. Click the menu icon three horizontal stripes and choose Settings
  3. Click the Keyboard shortcuts tab and locate the Choose your shortcuts section
  4. Choose your preferred settings under Improve selected text
Your keyboard shortcut combination must include a modifier key (e.g., Ctrl) and an alphanumeric key (character, digit, or spacebar).
