Paid DeepL Translator plans include 30 minutes of DeepL Voice per user per month, at no additional cost. This article answers the most common questions about how those minutes work.
Eligibility and admin controls
Which plans are eligible?
Translate Individual, Translate Team, Translate Business, DeepL Enterprise Translator, DeepL Pro Starter, DeepL Pro Advanced, DeepL Pro Ultimate, DeepL Pro Classic. Bundles are eligible whenever the Translate base plan is eligible: DeepL Pro Starter + Write Pro qualifies because Pro Starter qualifies, and the add-on changes neither eligibility nor the allowance.
Not eligible: API plans, Translate Free, and standalone Voice plans.
What happens if an admin switches Voice off?
Total access cutoff. Setting Voice allowance to off excludes all Voice properties from entitlements for every user in the organization — including users on a paid Voice seat. Re-enabling restores access.
Where do admins turn the Voice allowance on or off?
In the Account area, under the Subscriptions tab.
Who can turn the Voice allowance on or off, admins or all members?
Admins only.
What’s changing in the Terms & Conditions?
The Translate T&Cs gain a DeepL Voice section, published on 9 September.
Minutes and usage
How many minutes do users receive?
30 minutes per user per month on every eligible paid Translate plan.
- Paid and legacy tiers: 30 minutes per user / month, including bundles built on an eligible Translate base plan.
Once the minutes have been used, users can either wait for the reset or purchase a Voice plan. There is no overage path.
How is usage measured?
- Voice for Meetings: total clock time of all periods when at least 1 person has DeepL Voice enabled
- Voice for Conversation: actual spoken time (conversation participant speaks aloud in their preferred language while translated)
Which features are covered by the 30-minute allowance?
The allowance covers both Live subtitles and Voice-to-Voice (speech-to-speech) for Voice for Online Meetings and Voice for In-Person Conversations from a single allowance applied at the user level. In-product display shows the single combined bucket, not split by product.
Is there an additional cost to receive the Voice allowance?
No. The allowance is included at no additional cost for all qualifying Translate subscribers.
Are minutes pooled or per user?
Per user, not pooled. So one user exhausting their 30 minutes does not consume a teammate’s allowance. Admins do not assign Voice licences; the allowance attaches to the existing Translate seat.
Where can users see how many Voice minutes they have left?
There are two surfaces, depending on the role.
- Admins see it in the account area, on the subscription page: total minutes consumed across the organization, plus a per-user breakdown of who is using the voice allowance
- Members can see their own remaining minutes in the Voice product itself, via the in-product minutes usage bar
Are unused minutes carried over to the next month?
No, the voice allowance resets to 30 minutes monthly.
Reaching the limit
Are customers charged for overages once the 30 minutes are used?
No overages will be invoiced to the customer. Minutes are a plan limit, not a consumption billing item. To gain more minutes the customer will need to wait for the monthly reset or buy a Voice plan.
What happens after the 30 minutes are used?
Voice stays visible in the menu; continued use is blocked. The end user sees an out-of-minutes notice on the Voice product page.
A meeting is scheduled for 35 minutes. Does the meeting stop, or just the translation?
The meeting is not stopped by DeepL. The limit is checked once, when the connection opens or the host is set, before any audio flows. A session already running is never cut off mid-way, the next connection is refused. For Meetings and Group Conversations, if the first host has no remaining minutes left, the next eligible participant becomes the host and the usage is charged to them.
Plan changes and Voice plans
If a user upgrades mid-month, how are their minutes consumed?
There is no proration, limits are not prorated on mid-cycle plan changes. If a user is assigned a paid Voice seat mid-month they move to that plan’s limits and the 30-minute allowance no longer applies to them; users in the same org without a Voice seat keep their 30 minutes.
Which minutes apply if a customer has both a standalone Voice subscription and a plan-based Voice allowance?
The allocated minutes do not stack, and there is no sequencing. Seat-assigned users move to their paid Voice plan’s limits in favor of the 30-minute allowance; users in the same organization without a Voice seat keep their 30 minutes.
What does an organization holding both plans see?
The Voice allowance box and counter are hidden for organizations that hold a Voice plan.
What happens if a customer cancels their Voice plan and keeps their Translate plan?
The free Voice allowance becomes available again to those with a Translator license.
What happens if an organization that turned off the Voice allowance then starts a Voice trial?
Starting a Voice trial with the voice allowance off, turns on the voice allowance for everyone again. The voice allowance is at the organization-level and not scoped to the trialling user, the trial silently re-enables the 30-minute Voice allowance for every Translate user in that account, including organizationss that deliberately switched it off. The admin’s original opt-out is not preserved or restored when the trial ends; they would have to disable the toggle again manually.
Data and privacy
Is Voice usage under the allowance used to train DeepL models?
No. Voice usage that falls under the included allowance is treated exactly like paid Voice usage. DeepL Voice never uses your data to train our language models.
- Voice for In-Person Conversations: data is processed temporarily on your local device and deleted the moment it is no longer visible on screen.
- Voice for Online Meetings: audio, transcriptions, and translations are processed temporarily in memory and deleted once the call ends. Data is encrypted in transit. Transcriptions and translations that users have saved persist only on the participant’s local device, for up to 30 days (admin-controlled).
- Voice runs from EU-based data centers, and any third-party processing is contractually bound to zero data retention. DeepL is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type 2 certified, and GDPR and HIPAA compliant.
