The custom rules feature allows you to select a set of rules to apply when translating or improving text.

Use custom rules
To use your custom rules when translating your text, follow these steps:
- Go to DeepL Translator or navigate to the Translate text tab in your desktop app
- Click Custom Rules above the right text field
If you have more than one list of customer rules, a drop down menuwill appear
- Select the list you want to use
- Click to enable

- Go to DeepL Write or navigate to the DeepL Write tab in your desktop app
- Click Custom Rules above the right text field

Create a list of custom rules
DeepL account holders and team admins can create a list of custom rules. To define a new rule, users have the following options:
- Select one of multiple predefined options per rule
- Create a new rule via free text prompt
To create a new list of custom rules, follow these steps:
- Click the Custom rules icon
in the navigation bar
- Click New list
- Chose a name for the list and the language you wish to create the list of rules for
- Your new list will appear in the overview, select it to edit
- Any changes you make will be saved automatically
Now you can add new rules to your list via one of the options mentioned above.
To create a new rule via free text prompt, do the following:
- Open an existing list or create a new one
- Click Custom instructions
- Enter a rule name
- Specify the rule by entering a text instructions
- Click Save
The new custom instruction can now be applied to your own texts and translations.
Share a list of custom rules with your team
Only DeepL account holders and team admins can create custom rules lists. However, team admins can share their lists with their team members, as well as give them editing rights.
- Click the Custom rules icon
in the navigation bar
- Click the more options icon
next to the list you wish to share
- Enter the email address of the person you wish to share the list with and click Add

Click to enableShare with everyone for everyone in your team to be able to use the list of custom rules
When sharing your list with individual team members, their email addresses will appear under Who has access. There, you can decide what role you want to assign to that person.
- Editor: this person can edit the custom rules list, even if they are not a team admin
- Viewer: this person can use the custom rules list, but not edit it
- Remove: remove access to the custom rules list for this person
Delete a list of custom rules
Only DeepL account holders and team admins can delete custom rules lists. To delete an existing list of custom rules, follow these steps:
- Click the Custom rules icon
in the navigation bar
- Click the more option icon
next to the list you wish to delete
- Click Delete
Custom rules lists can be deleted by all team admins.
