How can I translate with DeepL while writing, without leaving my text editing tool or app?
You can translate texts as you're writing them directly in any application or tool that supports editing, by selecting those texts and using a shortcut. This means that you no longer have to switch to your DeepL app to translate your writing into a different language.
Please note that it is only possible to translate and replace editable text using this feature.
Currently, this feature is only available in the DeepL app for Windows and Mac. The feature isn't yet available in the mobile apps, or the web translator.
For Windows
To start using this feature in your DeepL app for Windows, first make sure that you have enabled it in your app settings. You can do so under Choose your shortcuts, by activating Translate in any app as you write.
Next, select the text you would like to translate in an app that supports text editing (a document, note, instant messenger, etc.) and press Ctrl+Win+C, the shortcut that enables this feature. Once you've pressed the shortcut, a window will appear in which you can select a target language for your translation.
Ctrl+Win+C is the default shortcut. It is also possible to set a custom shortcut in the settings of your DeepL app for Windows.
Your text will then be translated directly in the application or the field in which you are writing. The translation will replace the original text.
You can change the target language for every text you would like to translate. If you want to use the already selected target language, just click on the arrow icon to translate.
You can also deactivate the Translate in any app as you write feature. To do so, please disable it in the settings of your DeepL app for Windows, under Choose your shortcut.
When using this feature, you can translate up to 5,000 characters at a time. To translate more characters, please do it directly in the DeepL app for Windows.
For Mac
To start using this feature in your DeepL app for Mac, first make sure that you have enabled it in your app settings (Preferences), under General. You can do so under Translate in any app as you write, by selecting the shortcut ⇧⌘+C+C.
If you haven't granted your DeepL app for Mac accessibility permissions yet, a dialog will open asking you to do so in your System Settings. To grant accessibility permissions, open your system settings and go to Privacy & Security. Here you can browse to Accessibility and switch the toggle for DeepL on.
To translate text directly in another app that supports text editing (a document, note, instant messenger, etc.), select the text you would like to translate and press ⇧⌘+C+C, the shortcut that enables this feature. Once you've pressed the shortcut, a window will appear in which you can select a target language for your translation.
Your text will then be translated directly in the application or field in which you are writing. The translation will replace the original text.
You can change the target language for every text you would like to translate. If you want to use the already selected target language, just click on the arrow icon to translate.
You can also deactivate the Translate in any app as you write feature. To do so, please go back to Preferences in your DeepL app for Mac, find Translate in any app as you write under General and select Disable shortcut.
Please note that it is not possible to set a custom shortcut for this feature at the moment.
When using this feature, you can translate up to 5,000 characters at a time. To translate more characters, please do it directly in the DeepL app for Mac.
