Can I scan text with my camera for translation?
Yes, you can use your phone’s camera to translate text.
For iOS
This feature is currently available in the DeepL for iOS app for devices with iOS 15 or higher.
To translate text scanned with your camera, please do the following:
- Open the mobile app and select the languages.
- To scan text for translation, tap the Camera button
beneath the source text field. Your keyboard will switch to text scanning mode.
- Point your camera at the text you want to translate. The text inside the framed area will be inserted into the source text field and instantly translated to the language of your choice.
- Tap Insert to confirm the text selection and close the scanning mode. The final translation will be displayed.
The feature currently only supports the following source languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Chinese.
Please note that translations of small, badly lit, handwritten, or stylized text may not be accurate.
For Android
To translate text scanned with your camera, please do the following:
- Open the mobile app and select the languages.
- To scan text for translation, tap the Camera button
beneath the source text field. The interface will switch to text scanning mode. If permission wasn't granted yet, allow DeepL to take pictures and record videos.
- Point your camera at the text you want to translate and take a picture by tapping on the Camera button

- Confirm the text selection by tapping the Tick button
.
- The text will be inserted into the source text field and instantly translated to the language of your choice.
The feature currently doesn't support Greek and languages using the Cyrillic script as the source language.
