DeepL mobile apps allow you to use your phone’s camera to scan and translate text.
Note: The quality of the image will impact the translation quality. Ensure the image text is clear and legible.
For iOS
This feature is currently available in the DeepL for iOS app for iPhone and iPad.
Device and OS requirements:
iPhone | iPhone XS, iPhone XR or later with iOS 15 or later |
iPad | iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) or later, iPad Pro 11-inch (all models), iPad Air (3rd generation) or later, iPad (8th generation) or later and iPad mini (5th generation) or later with iPadOS 15.1 or later |
To translate text scanned with your camera:
- Open the mobile app and select the languages
- Tap the Camera button to switch to text scanning mode
- Use the capture button to take a picture of the text you want to translate
- Translated text will overlay the source text in the image
The feature currently supports the following source languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian.
For Android
To translate text scanned with your camera, please do the following:
- Open the mobile app and select the languages.
- Tap the Camera button to switch to text scanning mode.
- Use the capture button to take a picture of the text you want to translate

Select an existing picture via the Gallery icon - Translated text will overlay the source text in the image
Note: You may need to allow DeepL access to your camera to take pictures and videos.
The feature currently doesn't support the following source languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Greek, Russian, and Ukrainian.
