The custom rules feature allows you to select a set of rules for texts you improve with DeepL Write. These rules make changes to your text according to the selected formatting and spelling conventions. There are nine rules available for English and ten for German.

Custom rules are supported for DeepL Write on web.

 

Create a list of custom rules

DeepL account holders and team admins can create custom rules.

To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Custom rules in the navigation bar
  2. Click New list
  3. Chose a name for the list and the language you wish to create the list of rules for
  4. Your new list will appear in the overview, click on it to edit
  5. Any changes you make will be saved automatically

 

Share a list of custom rules with your team

Only DeepL account holders and team admins can create custom rules lists. However, team admins can share their lists with their team members, as well as give them editing rights.

  1. Click the Custom rules icon Custom rules icon in the navigation bar
  2. Click the three dot menu ellipsis.svg next to the list you wish to share
  3. Enter the email address of the person you wish to share the list with and click Add

    Click the toggle next to Share with everyone for everyone in your team to be able to use the list of custom rules

When sharing your list with individual team members, their email addresses will appear under Who has access. There, you can decide what role you want to assign to that person.

  • Editor: this person can edit the custom rules list, even if they are not a team admin
  • Viewer: this person can use the custom rules list, but not edit it
  • Remove: remove access to the custom rules list for this person

 

Delete a list of custom rules

Only DeepL account holders and team admins can delete custom rules lists. To delete an existing list of custom rules, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Custom rules icon Custom rules icon in the navigation bar
  2. Click the three dot menu ellipsis icon next to the list you wish to delete
  3. Click Delete

Custom rules lists can be deleted by all team admins.

 

Use custom rules when improving your text

To use your custom rules when improving your text, follow these steps:

  1. Go to DeepL Write
  2. Click Custom Rules above the right text field
    If you have more than one list of customer rules, a drop down menu will appear
  3. Select the list you want to use
  4. Enable the toggle next to Custom rules
You will only see the lists of custom rules that are applicable for the language you currently have selected.
