Translating Excel files
You can translate whole Excel files on our web translator, the desktop apps, and with our API.
It is only available for the following plans: DeepL Pro Advanced, DeepL Pro Ultimate, DeepL API Free, and DeepL API Pro. You can find more information about all supported document formats in this article.
DeepL Pro Advanced and Ultimate subscribers can translate Excel files by using the document translation feature.
DeepL API Free and Pro subscribers can translate Excel files by using /document requests. Please consult our API documentation to learn how you can translate Excel files with the DeepL API.
Note: At the moment, not all parts of your file will be translated. In Excel file translations, the following parts will be translated:
- Text in cells
- File name
- Sheet name
- Chart title
- Graphs
Hidden columns, rows, and sheets will also be translated. Currently, it is not possible to exclude specific parts of the file from translation.
The following parts will not be translated in the translated file:
- Formulas
- Formulas will not be applied in the translated file. Only the result of the formula will be visible in the translation.
- Notes
- Notes included in your file will not be translated at the moment. The original note will be visible in the translated file.
- Images
- Text embedded in images will not be translated. The original image will be visible in the translated file.
If your Excel file was not translated correctly
Please note that only Excel files with the file format XLSX are supported for the document translation feature. Other file formats, such as XLS or XLSM, cannot be selected for translation.
If you are unable to select an Excel file for translation, ensure that the file is in the correct file format. Also, please check to ensure that the file is not open.
Please also make sure that your Excel file does not contain more than one source language. If your file contains more than one source language, this might affect the translation quality.
